Heidfeld finished the race in eighth, but was penalised for using FanBoost twice, which saw him drop down to thirteenth.
When we spoke, it was not known that Heidfeld was under investigation, and he was happy with how his race went.
‘[The race] was okay, I think I could have fought a bit harder in the end of my first stint. I was going one lap longer than some of the guys around me, who then overtook me. This meant I had more energy for the second stint, which is always good in this series.
‘But the safety car stayed out so long my advantage was a lot less, as everyone needed to lift and coast less. Eighth is good, still some points and great for the team to have another podium with Bruno.’
Looking ahead to tomorrow – the final race of the season – Heidfeld was optimistic.
‘It’s a new day. For sure we learnt something. I hope with we will have normal conditions in qualifying, or at least the same conditions for everybody. Hopefully we will end the race in the points again.’
I asked him if he wouldn’t prefer to have his session be dry, and have the others battle it out in the wet, but ever the fair sportsman he replied:
‘I would prefer it to be dry and be fair for everyone.’
The final race of the 2016/17 Formula E takes place on Sunday at 4pm.
