Not a drop of rain was in sight as eighteen cars took to the track for the final qualifying session of the series.

There was limited running throughout the day heading into qualy. The second free practice session was cancelled after some teams had issues with their car-charging infrastructure. Only a handful of drivers had completed their qualifying simulated laps, and Simona De Silvestro had only done five laps.

Yesterday’s poleman Nico Prost headed out in the first group and quickly set the benchmark for the session.  Sam Bird reported issues with braking and could only manage 8th fastest. Reigning Champion Nelson Piquet Jr managed to qualify in the top ten ahead of the two Dragon cars. Loic Duval managed to go 10th fastest, but will the race last.

Lucas Di Grassi locked up on his flying lap in the second group, but managed to get himself just behind Prost. Sebastien Buemi then took to the track in group three and slid round the track, laying down the gauntlet to Di Grassi and the first to set a lap time in the 1 minute 22 seconds. This was enough to get them both into Super Pole along with a flying Oliver Turvey, Prost, and Nick Heidfeld.

Heidfeld was first out followed by Di Grassi who responded to Buemi’s stunning lap, also dipping into the 1.22s despite a lockup. He was pretty happy with his efforts, until Nico Prost posted his time and ousted the Brazilian from provisional pole.

Sebastien Buemi was last to take to the track, and blitzed the field. His pole position gifted him three points, meaning that he and Di Grassi are level on 153 points going in to the race.
